What is BJCP, you say? BJCP is the acronym for Beer judge Certification Program. The Beer Judge Certification Program or BJCP is a non-profit organization formed in 1985 "to promote beer literacy and the appreciation of real beer, and to recognize beer tasting and evaluation skills."
What does it take to become a certified beer judge? Lot's of homework, reading, exams and more reading. Oh ya, there is also a lot of beer tastings. Over 70 beer styles! As a certified beer judge you will be able to identify a variety of styles and characteristics in a world of beer plus you get to judge homebrew and commercial competitions.
BJCP certification is a lot of work and a lot of fun. Classes will be lead by a local BJCP certified judge for 12 weeks - 1 Wednesday night per week for 3 - 3.5 hours at Sograte BBQ and Brew. The class registration fee is $50.00, plus you will be asked for help supplying the beer as needed. Not only will this class prepare you for the BJCP exam you can also simply use it as an exploration into the world of beer.
Why would you want to do this? Well, besides being awesome - you will be able to help us judge the upcoming Cactus Challenge homebrew contest hosted by the Ale-ian Society, Lubbock's local homebrew club. The Cactus Challenge is celebrating it's 13th year of homebrew competition and is a registered contest in the Lone Star Circuit.
Entry deadline is this weekend, Saturday 29th. Contact me or come out to Lubbock's homebrew and BBQ supply store, Sograte BBQ and Brew, to register for your class. We are open from 7:00 pm to 9:00pm on Thursday and Friday nights and 2:00pm to 6:00 pm on Saturday afternoons. $50.00 fee must be paid up front at the time of registration.
